The Struggle

Posted by A Tobias 11 months ago
It's been a long time since my last post here. Quite frankly, I've been struggling a lot recently with crippling depression... which isn't new for me, but which was certainly worsened by finding out that I have a brain tumour. I don't want to say that I've given up being creative; I've spent such a large chunk of my life making things that I can't imagine not doing that anymore. But making games alone is hard and potentially fruitless work, and my failure to connect with other people is really getting in the way of everything.

My Mon Games

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
Pokemon's popular again. I like this, because I've always liked Pokemon, ∞ as I wrote at tedious length in my personal blog ∞. Making a Pokemon-like game myself is probably the idea I've returned to the most over the years, and that flame has been rekindled by Pokemon GO. Before diving into yet another project I'll fail to finish, however, I'd like to revisit and review my old attempts at making a monster catching game; what I feel worked or didn't.

Soulmate Development 1: Overview

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
I want to develop this new project, Soulmate, transparently; that is, I'll post about every step of the process in order to seek opinions and ensure that I'm making something that people will actually enjoy. In this first post, I want to (once again) sketch out the gist of the game as a whole. In the past, I didn't do this because I didn't want to reveal spoilers... but I am going to be quite spoilery here because it seems wiser than working on something that'll only disappoint.

4 Possible Game Ideas

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
I've been occupied recently with university exams, but now that they - and the first academic year - are over, I have several long, lonely months ahead of me which I can use to finally properly get back to games development. I'm unsure which direction to take it in, though; as ∞ before ∞, there are four ideas I could explore, though somewhat different ones this time!

Coming Together

Posted by A Tobias 2 years ago
Sorry yet again about the delays and inactivity! It's not that I've stopped caring or drifted too far off course; I'm just working my way through a lot of difficult things right now. Still. I have three weeks free after next week, though, so I'll have more than enough time to resume work on games development. I'd like to write a bit here though about dipping my toe into the world of games playing, which I rarely do...

Taming Taming Dreams

Posted by A Tobias 2 years ago
While I released the ∞ Android version of Taming Dreams ∞ a while ago, I'm uncertain, conflicted, and unmotivated about where to go from here, though I'm making progress with all of those things, which I'd like to write about here. I'll also address some of the things people mentioned in comments on my ∞ previous post ∞. Mostly, I want to talk about the creative process, the effect that judgement has on it, and various aspects of Taming Dreams that I feel could have been done better based on the feedback I've got so far, particularly in regards to storytelling and character depictions. I'll also touch on the common suggestion that I should be developing for Steam instead.

The Spiral

Posted by A Tobias 2 years ago
Firstly, ∞ here's the Android version of Taming Dreams ∞! I want to talk about TD a bit here, but also my games development as a whole. For years, I've been going around in circles, repeating patterns and getting nowhere. I start projects that are supposed to be short and fast and profitable, but they grow out of control and become too big to manage, so my attention is taken to new ideas instead. However, I feel that with each revolution, I get closer and closer to the point I've been circling. I'm able to take the best parts of my previous ideas and combine them into new ideas that are (I feel) better than those that came before. Creation is largely a process of trial and error anyway; nobody creates a masterpiece without leaving a trail of failures in their wake. My uncertainty about Taming Dreams that I spoke of in my ∞ last post ∞ has led to me looking back on all the games I've started and never finished, wondering whether cannibalising them might lead to the elusive holy grail I've been searching for (that is, a quick-to-make but profitable game). I've come up with four ideas I could potentially explore.

The Future of Taming Dreams

Posted by A Tobias 2 years ago
As always, here's a link to the ∞ Android version of Taming Dreams ∞, since attention to it went down a lot when I didn't include one! Speaking of which, the game's not been a huge success so far. I know that's because I've yet to actively promote it, but - while most of the feedback has been positive, some very positive - some statistics and negative feedback makes me wonder about where I should actually go from here...

Crisp Mobile Scaling (EDIT)

Posted by A Tobias 2 years ago
I'm still working on MARDEK, and I've fixed several things (though I'm in the middle of fixing others, so I can't upload an update just yet), but I'm particularly concerned about the fact that the game scales poorly on the wide variety of mobile screen resolutions, leading to graphical glitches - such as gaps between tiles or some pixels being smaller than others - and difficulties interacting with too-small controls or reading too-small text. I should probably re-engineer the whole thing to, well, work better, but it'll be quite an undertaking...

Fretful Musings on Obsolescence

Posted by A Tobias 2 years ago
I'm planning to release MARDEK 'as soon as possible', but ugh; every time I think I'm done, I discover new barriers in the way... Not just technical bugs with MARDEK, but other things relating to how to release an app, or psychological avoidance stemming from isolation and a lack of immediate emotional support that makes it difficult to do research in the first place.
