Taming Taming Dreams

Posted by A Tobias 12 months ago
While I released the ∞ Android version of Taming Dreams ∞ a while ago, I'm uncertain, conflicted, and unmotivated about where to go from here, though I'm making progress with all of those things, which I'd like to write about here. I'll also address some of the things people mentioned in comments on my ∞ previous post ∞. Mostly, I want to talk about the creative process, the effect that judgement has on it, and various aspects of Taming Dreams that I feel could have been done better based on the feedback I've got so far, particularly in regards to storytelling and character depictions. I'll also touch on the common suggestion that I should be developing for Steam instead.

The Spiral

Posted by A Tobias 12 months ago
Firstly, ∞ here's the Android version of Taming Dreams ∞! I want to talk about TD a bit here, but also my games development as a whole. For years, I've been going around in circles, repeating patterns and getting nowhere. I start projects that are supposed to be short and fast and profitable, but they grow out of control and become too big to manage, so my attention is taken to new ideas instead. However, I feel that with each revolution, I get closer and closer to the point I've been circling. I'm able to take the best parts of my previous ideas and combine them into new ideas that are (I feel) better than those that came before. Creation is largely a process of trial and error anyway; nobody creates a masterpiece without leaving a trail of failures in their wake. My uncertainty about Taming Dreams that I spoke of in my ∞ last post ∞ has led to me looking back on all the games I've started and never finished, wondering whether cannibalising them might lead to the elusive holy grail I've been searching for (that is, a quick-to-make but profitable game). I've come up with four ideas I could potentially explore.

Taming Dreams Android Release!

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
Gasp! I've 'officially' released Taming Dreams on Android now! You can get in it the app store ∞ here ∞! An iOS release will be coming soon, though Bluestacks enables you to play the Android version on your laptop or PC or whatever if you prefer that or don't want to wait. While I did my best to ensure that this version is free of bugs, please report any issues you find so then I can fix them!

Quick Update

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
I got an iPhone on Monday so then I could publish to those, and I've already got a port working perfectly! However, it seems that I need an actual Mac computer to upload any apps to Apple's app store, so SIGH. Thankfully, the university has Macs in the library, so hopefully I should be able to use those when I next have the chance.

Android Resolution Survey

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
Taming Dreams Episode 3 testing has been coming along quite slowly, due to a whole host of technical issues and my own preparations for university eating into development time. But it hopefully won't take much longer!! One thing that I have discovered though is that the game looks less than ideal on certain small screen resolutions (because it tries to pack a bunch of GUI things into a space that's far too small for them all). Because of this, I'd like to take a survey of what screen sizes are most common.

Crisp Mobile Scaling (EDIT)

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
I'm still working on MARDEK, and I've fixed several things (though I'm in the middle of fixing others, so I can't upload an update just yet), but I'm particularly concerned about the fact that the game scales poorly on the wide variety of mobile screen resolutions, leading to graphical glitches - such as gaps between tiles or some pixels being smaller than others - and difficulties interacting with too-small controls or reading too-small text. I should probably re-engineer the whole thing to, well, work better, but it'll be quite an undertaking...

MARDEK is too sexy

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
I'm in the process of uploading MARDEK to the Google Play Store, and to determine your app's maturity rating, you have to fill in a questionnaire thing, which at first I thought was too black-and-white and simplistic, so I wrote some long post about it here, complaining! BUT immediately after posting it, I realised that it's not as simplistic as I thought, so I suppose such a post was unnecessary.

Fretful Musings on Obsolescence

Posted by A Tobias 1 year ago
I'm planning to release MARDEK 'as soon as possible', but ugh; every time I think I'm done, I discover new barriers in the way... Not just technical bugs with MARDEK, but other things relating to how to release an app, or psychological avoidance stemming from isolation and a lack of immediate emotional support that makes it difficult to do research in the first place.

A Release Plan!

Posted by A Tobias 2 years ago
Thank you to those who commented on the previous post! I've read all the replies, and while I'm not yet 100% certain of what to do, I do feel at least that I have some ideas to work with. I'll reply to some individual comments later, but I'm also going to use this post to write out my general thoughts as they are at the moment.
