That was the original intention yes, but there just wasn't enough for the swords to really do in what the skills system evolved into. There are still physical attacks, it's just that you summon a monster to execute them.

I'd say it's Pokemon 'reminiscent' or something, but the mechanics and general lore are completely different. Monsters are more like spells or weapons than pets, so you change them around in the same way you might change around equipment or skills in another game.

I'm curious to see how it'll register to people though, when they actually play it. I mean, I made Memody as a memory game, but people saw it as a rhythm game despite any explanations I gave because of how our minds work... So would this register as an RPG with a quirky skills/magic system as it's supposed to, or not?

I hope it registers like you hope it does, and not in a way that lets down people's expectations, like Sindrel Song apparently did. I was never into the whole Pokemon thing myself, so I can't say exactly. But it certainly contrasts with how complicated the runes and magic seem to be and the themes you are trying to explore. The way I initially understood it is that there would be the option to play it as a more standard RPG without the monster-taming part. I was hoping it would be a little more like MARDEK, since that's what your initial plans were, a reimagining, so it's a bit uncomfortable seeing it move in a different direction.

What's a 'standard RPG', though? Is Final Fantasy XIII-2 one? How about FFXII? VIII? X? Xenoblade Chronicles? Anything based on D&D? Most RPGs I've played have at least some quirky complexity to their battle systems, so I wonder what you're familiar with that just doesn't have any of that. Generic RPG Maker games, maybe? What about the runes and magic is registering as complex to you? I might have just explained it poorly!

I'm also wondering what you're assuming this 'monster taming' entails. I've decided on that as a way of acquiring skills, essentially, since it solves the problem of how else that might be done. A run without doing it would be possible (you start with some, and might get some via plot events), but a challenge, like a MARDEK run without opening treasure chests or something.

If you're put off by the thought of monster taming as a concept, why? What puts you off Pokemon? I don't think I've ever met a person who likes RPGs but didn't like that; it's literally the most profitable franchise in the world, so I can't imagine any comparisons to it will be negative in most players' eyes and I'm very curious about why it would be in yours!
