I hope it registers like you hope it does, and not in a way that lets down people's expectations, like Sindrel Song apparently did. I was never into the whole Pokemon thing myself, so I can't say exactly. But it certainly contrasts with how complicated the runes and magic seem to be and the themes you are trying to explore. The way I initially understood it is that there would be the option to play it as a more standard RPG without the monster-taming part. I was hoping it would be a little more like MARDEK, since that's what your initial plans were, a reimagining, so it's a bit uncomfortable seeing it move in a different direction.

What's a 'standard RPG', though? Is Final Fantasy XIII-2 one? How about FFXII? VIII? X? Xenoblade Chronicles? Anything based on D&D? Most RPGs I've played have at least some quirky complexity to their battle systems, so I wonder what you're familiar with that just doesn't have any of that. Generic RPG Maker games, maybe? What about the runes and magic is registering as complex to you? I might have just explained it poorly!

I'm also wondering what you're assuming this 'monster taming' entails. I've decided on that as a way of acquiring skills, essentially, since it solves the problem of how else that might be done. A run without doing it would be possible (you start with some, and might get some via plot events), but a challenge, like a MARDEK run without opening treasure chests or something.

If you're put off by the thought of monster taming as a concept, why? What puts you off Pokemon? I don't think I've ever met a person who likes RPGs but didn't like that; it's literally the most profitable franchise in the world, so I can't imagine any comparisons to it will be negative in most players' eyes and I'm very curious about why it would be in yours!
