Haha, I definitely share your frustrations in that the age of the first KH game definitely shows in its cutscenes and gameplay. The last time I played that game (which must have been about 8-9 years ago when the HD package first came out on PS3), I definitely felt the clunkiness and found myself rushing through certain parts. This wasn’t at all a problem for the sequel, which felt incredibly crisp and smooth. KH2 was so far ahead of its time that it remains not only up to par but often superior to modern games. What I did particularly like about the original game is the open-ended world design because the verticality and non-linear pathways made exploration very satisfying. Future games sacrificed this aspect, I feel, to prioritise fantastic set-pieces so the maps have a more cookie-cutter 2D geometry.
