Interesting read about your personal view | stance to anime.
For me I did discover the world of Manga and Anime at an age of 13/14 and it was quite different from the things I known so far.
I had read Belgium comics especially Suske and Wiske (It is apparently called Spike and Suzy in English) and comparing those it was sort of a mind blowing experience for me.
Manga | Anime was important to me till an age of 23/24 and after that it slowly faded away.
These days I just can not be botherd to read or watch anything, Manga or Anime.
But I also struggle with regular movies and series. I prefer to listen to music or read a book and ocassionaly play a video game.
So will there come a time again that I look these things up ,probably.
