I liked anime since before I knew what anime was. ^_^ DBZ was my favorite show, and I didn't even know it was an anime for years. When I did find anime and manga that I knew was anime and manga, I loved it. The art styles were great (to my mind), and the stories were a whole new world of fiction to explore. Obviously, not every anime or manga is great, but I liked the idea. In the US, cartoons were usually just little kids' shows, so having anime as an older kid and adult was kind of a shift in perspective for us, and a good one imo.

I think you're right that it's kind of a social outcast thing, but anime and manga seems to also be catching on in the mainstream more and more. For instance, I just recently made a trip to McDonald's and got a receipt from "WcDonald's" (which is what they call it in InuYasha, don't know about other manga) with a short little manga style comic printed on it. Clearly they're trying to appeal to someone, maybe a younger audience.

I noticed Korean style and other graphic novels are getting popular as well. Webtoons has a lot of popular stories. I saw that Lore Olympus got published in book form for instance, although I'm not a fan of it personally. But it's cool to see more and more graphic novels these days for both younger and older audiences. IMO. ^_^

I'm sad about Akira Toriyama as well. I'm not even as big of a Dragon Ball fan these days, but it's quite the legacy to leave behind.
