The Struggle

It's been a long time since my last post here. Quite frankly, I've been struggling a lot recently with crippling depression... which isn't new for me, but which was certainly worsened by finding out that I have a brain tumour. I don't want to say that I've given up being creative; I've spent such a large chunk of my life making things that I can't imagine not doing that anymore. But making games alone is hard and potentially fruitless work, and my failure to connect with other people is really getting in the way of everything.

Idea: Inner Demons

I like Pokemon, and I like personal development. I've recently been brainstorming ideas for an app - not really a game - which is sort of a combination of these two. Perhaps it'd be called something like "Inner Demons" or "Mind Tamer" or "Emotimon" or some better title I've yet to come up with, and it'd be a way of visualising and cultivating our inner worlds in terms of traits, fears, aspirations, strengths, and personal connections, represented as animal-like creatures that you feed whenever you engage a part of yourself, and in feeding them, they grow and evolve to represent your own personal growth and evolution.

My Mon Games

Pokemon's popular again. I like this, because I've always liked Pokemon, ∞ as I wrote at tedious length in my personal blog ∞. Making a Pokemon-like game myself is probably the idea I've returned to the most over the years, and that flame has been rekindled by Pokemon GO. Before diving into yet another project I'll fail to finish, however, I'd like to revisit and review my old attempts at making a monster catching game; what I feel worked or didn't.

I'm currently recovering from brain surgery, which I had last week. Things like this shake up life a lot... but now that it's over for the moment (but not for good), I feel a bit lost. I've been trying to get back to games development, though, so I'd like to write a bit about that here.

Brain Surgery

I've made little progress on Soulmate recently, as I've had a lot on my mind... Specifically cerebrospinal fluid, which next week's brain surgery is intended to remedy. An excess of it. On my mind. Get it? No? Oh, never mind. The point is that a person will pierce my mindmeat in a couple of days and also I might have a cancerous tumour and might die. All the best things in life happen to me, as you can clearly see.

It talks about how we outgrow games because as a medium of expression they're usually puerile... and how games that tackle more meaningful topics tend to be unprofitable and ridiculed for existing. Soulmate Development 7: Soulmate & Concepts

I'd been trying to dive straight into asset creation with Soulmate, though I realised that I needed to think much more carefully about the groundwork - the conceptual base, story and setting - first. So I've done that! Though normally I'd avoid posting openly about story development like this to avoid 'spoilers' for when the game is done, I think it'll be more interesting to be able to watch as things develop over time. To compare the final story to the notes I had at this stage. I've also drawn a rudimentary design of the eponymous, androgynous Soulmate character!
